Mohanlal is undoubtedly the biggest star in Malayalam cinema. At the age of 65 this year, he has delivered two big blockbusters, L2: Empuraan and Tudarum. After releasing five films so far this year (namely, L2: Empuraan, Tudarum, an extended cameo in Kannappa, Hrudayapoorvam, and an extended cameo in Bha Bha Ba), he has made an action fantasy drama film called “Vrishabha”. Kannada film director Nanda Kishore has directed it and Sam C.S. has composed the music for the film. After a long time in the making, the film has finally released in theatres today on the occasion of Christmas. Did Mohanlal end the eventful year with a blockbuster? Did director Nanda Kishore take the opportunity and make a captivating film? Let’s find out with a detailed analysis.
What is it about?
The film talks about reincarnation and past life relics. It is the story of a king, Vijayendra Vrishabha (Mohanlal) in a past life and a businessman, Adi Deva Varma (Mohanlal) in the present life and how his actions affected him, his wife and his son. The film
addresses the question – do humans have to face the consequences of their actions in their past lives and in their present lives?
When an actor like Mohanlal comes across as a clueless, unenthusiastic, uninterested actor, we can’t really talk much about the other actors in the film. The film features several leading actors from the Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada film industries and almost all of them deliver underwhelming and forgettable performances. Even the small role played by Bollywood’s erstwhile hero Jeetendra seemed completely ineffectual.
Music director Sam C.S., cinematographer Antony Samson, editor K.M. Prakash – all three are talented technicians but ultimately they have given a poor output to the film. Instead of blaming the technicians, it is safe to blame the director’s lack of imagination. The background music is annoying. The editing is abysmal. The movie’s runtime is just two hours but the viewing experience deteriorates with every passing minute. And, the cinematography along with the AI-generated visuals is laughable. This is a film where the technician involved has given a terrible output. It is surprising to see three production houses OK a movie and fund it.
1. None
Cons:
1. Terrible direction
2. Terrible acting
3. Terrible performances
4. Terrible visuals
5. Terrible music
6. Etc.
As an audience, there is always a chance for people to walk out of the theatre when they don’t like a film. But, reviewers don’t have the option of walking out. No matter how bad the film is, a reviewer has to sit through the whole film to write a detailed analysis. The chances of a reviewer watching a terrible film are always a distant Friday.
—Apart from knowing that Mohanlal is the hero and that it is an action fantasy drama, I don’t know much about the film. As soon as I entered the theatre, I was shocked to see that only one other person was present at the prime time show on the first evening of its release. Within the first five minutes, I realised what kind of experience I was going to have for the next two hours. The only person in the theatre walked out within twenty minutes of the film starting. But I didn’t have that option. I had to sit through the whole film and write a review.—
To put it simply, Vrishabha has a very good chance of being in the ‘three worst films of the year’ list in the Indian film industry.
Vrishabha, if we go by the people associated with it, is literally a Pan India film. It is directed by a Kannada film director, with a Malayalam star hero in the lead role along with several actors from Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi film industries. And, the producers of this film are three corporate companies from Mumbai & Dubai. When you have Mohanlal as the hero and many famous names in the crew, the audience expects a bearable film. But, what we see is a mess of a film in the name of ‘past life relics’, AI-generated ridiculous visuals and terrible and uninteresting performances by almost every actor. The acting of ‘The Complete Actor’ Mohanlal is not that interesting, that too in a film that has the epithet ‘God of Acting’ in the title card.
Overall, Vrishabha, with a runtime of just two hours, tests your patience and will bore you like there is no tomorrow. Do yourself a favor by staying away from this film not only in theatres but also on any OTT platform. This is shocking for a film from Mohanlal and the team and it is not worthy of the audience’s precious time and money.
Final Verdict – Stay Away
Rating – 1/5
